In life, you’ve got to look carefully.
You’ve got to look carefully, because sometimes — many times — the ‘right way’ isn’t what’s best for you right now. There will be times when you find yourself following the more difficult, less glamorous approach, the ‘this isn’t what I expected’ path in your work and life.
Nevertheless, there’s a knowing within you. It’s difficult to explain to other people (and even yourself), but you know.
Recently, I was reminded of this phrase:
“I do not give to you as the world gives.”
That’s all I got.
Many of us believe that following faith means our life gets a simple upgrade, version 2.0. In our imagined v2.0, we work hard, we lifehack, we hustle, we do all the things that society tells us to do in order to ‘live well’, with the hope that ours will be extra special because we believe in God.
And that’s why so many of us are stuck. That’s why it can feel like despite ticking all the boxes, nothing has really changed. Because instead of taking the risks that are calling us, we're clinging onto the world's 'best practices', and hoping Jesus will 10x it.
But Jesus says in John 14, “I do not give to you as the world gives.” In other words, he’s not going to make our old ways pursuing success extra special, he’s going to give us something new, something better. With God, the rules of this game of life are completely different.
He goes onto say, “do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Because he knows that diverging from the norm feels like a massive risk, and the unknown is scary.
But if we let our obedience overshadow the fear, there’s a payoff on the other side, there are major benefits we'd never expect. And there’s a method to the madness, as demonstrated in these two individuals...
